Transition to home schooling. An autistic child and a school.

after we finally decided to transfer Alice to home schooling (I wrote about this here and here) everything calmed down somehow. I signed her up for a psychiatrist, the homeroom teacher began to prepare a characterization. Before the psychiatrist’s appointment, which is 2 weeks, Alice continued to go to class. The tantrums stopped, she clearly sat for 2 lessons, and then she was released. However, a week later she caught a cold and we stayed at home for the rest of the time.

By the way, during this time we also managed to cure her teeth, and I wrote about this here.

It is worth telling separately how I took the characteristic and the certificate. I took them from the homeroom teacher. She gave me a description, asked me to read it so that she could answer questions if they appeared. I had time, because I still had to wait until they made a certificate. With such a characteristic, Alice should have been sent to home schooling without talking. Actually, there was nothing new there, except that I was surprised to learn that she does not have hygiene skills, everything else has already been discussed. The class teacher again started talking about medical forecasts for the speech, that only I can decide which format of education for my child will be better, again told what progress her students have made.

At this time, the children, Alice’s classmates, returned to the classroom after physical education. The teacher sternly told them that the math teacher would come now and she would not be happy that the children remained in sports form. She asked them to change and said she was counting to five. After “one”, the children continued to go about their business, “two”, they didn’t even hear. After that, she said that, in principle, this lesson is their last and after it they will have lunch and go home, which means I can not change clothes. Here I realized that we had made the right decision, said that I had no questions left and went for help.

I went to the psychiatrist alone, because Alice was still coughing, and we are well known there, we are regularly monitored. I described the situation, gave the documents from the school, answered the doctor’s questions and found out that we do not need to come to the meeting of the medical commission itself. We had to pick up the report on Tuesday afternoon from the nurse.

So, with a ready conclusion, I came to Shuola to write an application for transfer to home schooling. The director went on vacation and I talked to the head teacher. To be honest, I really like her. It happens when you feel that a person is on the same wavelength with you. She assured me that Alice would be given teachers with experience working with autistic people and they would try to pick up the time before lunch, but she immediately warned that everyone’s hours were almost completely scheduled and it was unlikely to work out perfectly by 8.30. I said that the main thing is to build a good relationship with the teacher, and time is already secondary, but it’s better, of course, in the morning.

Unfortunately, autumn is always an exacerbation of various kinds of diseases, and this year they get sick after one, and by the end of the week we were still waiting for the issue with our teacher to be resolved. And so, on Monday, the head teacher called me and was pleased that the issue was resolved, Alice has a new teacher! In the evening, the teacher herself called me, we discussed with her how best to build the learning process. I offered to give Alice a folder with our homework assignments, which we are doing, so that she would have the opportunity to assess what Alice can do, and what she has difficulties with on the material familiar to the child. The teacher supported my idea and, satisfied with each other, we said goodbye.

Tomorrow Alice had to get acquainted not only with a new teacher, but also with a new learning system.
